Vehicle Break-In Recommendations
A new car needs to be broken-in properly in order to perform up to its maximum potential and to ensure long term reliability. Automobiles today are manufactured in such a manner that they are far superior and more complex than those models offered in the past. With more complex powertrain components and operating systems, it is imperative that proper Break-In Procedures be followed. Ensuring proper initial component seating and wearing for your vehicle, from your engine, transmission and to your tires is critical.
Ford Motor Company Recommendations:
New tires need to be run-in for approximately 300 miles and that during this time, you may experience different driving characteristics. For the powertrain, they state that you should avoid driving too fast during the first 1,000 miles and that you should vary your speed frequently and change up through the gears early…and most importantly Do Not labor the engine and avoid full throttle acceleration for the first 100 miles. Additionally they tell you that you should avoid heavy use of the brakes and clutch if possible for the first 100 miles in town and for the first 1,000 mi on freeways when high speed braking may be encountered.
It’s worth noting that a lot of these guidelines are just that: guidelines, and not hard and fast rules…nevertheless one needs to be prudent.
Initial Powertrain Break-In for your first 1,000 Miles:
As tempting as it may be to get into your new Steeda Performance Vehicle and just “nail it” every time you launch….. we recommend against that practice and allow your vehicle’s components to settle in together properly. Don’t go crazy by burning rubber and slamming your engine to redline, that’s not a good way to break-in your vehicle. Remember - Ford recommends driving at least 100 miles before performing wide open throttle maneuvers. Also, avoid a constant 2,500 RPM highway road trip by modulating the throttle every now and then so your engine has different operating speeds so your piston rings settle properly with the piston and cylinder walls. For those vehicles equipped with a manual-transmissions, be sure not to lug the engine when driving. This is never a good idea but can be especially harmful during the initial break-in period.
By properly breaking in your vehicle you will take great steps so as to ensure your long-term enjoyment of your new Steeda vehicle.
